How to Prepare for CUET 2027 and Crack the Exam in Your First Attempt

If you’re in Class 12, I’d guess you’ve already had this conversation a few times. Someone at school says start now. Someone else says relax, there’s plenty of time. A YouTube video gives you a date that turns out to be wrong. And you’re left wondering what you should actually be doing today.

Let us sort that out. CUET UG is the entrance test that many central state, deemed and private universities use for admissions. It seems big at first but it is easier once you split it into parts. Below I will go through the exam pattern, how to pick subjects a study plan that fits with your board exams and the mistakes that quietly cost students marks. If you want a start, to your CUET UG preparation read on.

What Is Confirmed and What Is Not

NTA has not yet officially announced the CUET UG 2027 notification or examination dates. You may see websites predicting that registration will open in January or that the exam will take place in May. These are expectations based on earlier schedules, not confirmed dates.

That said, you don’t need to wait for the notification to start preparing. The CUET UG 2026 examination pattern gives you a useful starting point, but the 2027 rules may change. Check NTA’s official information bulletin when it becomes available.

How the CUET Exam Pattern Looks

In 2026 the exam had language papers, domain subjects and the General Aptitude Test (GAT). People could pick, up to five papers from the options. The options had 13 languages and 23 domain subjects, plus the General Aptitude Test. The exam was done on a computer. The questions were multiple choice.

Each paper had 50 questions. Lasted 60 minutes. People got 5 marks for an answer and lost 1 mark for a wrong answer. Questions that were not attempted had no penalty.

This information helps to know about the 2026 exam. Do not think the same format will be used in 2027. When NTA gives the information bulletin read it carefully and check the number of subjects number of questions, time and scoring system.

Your subject choices are important. The papers you need depend on the requirements of the course and university you want to join. So look at those requirements before you decide on your study plan.

Choosing Your Subjects

Honestly, this is the step students hurry through most. A senior mentions that some subject is “scoring,” and the choice is made before dinner. I’d suggest doing it the other way around. Start with the courses and universities you like, then look at which CUET subjects they ask for.

Universities don’t all follow the same rules. One might need a specific domain subject for a course, while another accepts something different for a similar course. So open each eligibility page yourself and read it properly.

After that, shortlist the subjects you need and feel comfortable preparing for. For CUET UG 2026, domain-subject syllabi were based on the NCERT syllabus. Check the official CUET UG 2027 syllabus when it is released.

Make a small table in your notebook with three columns: course, university and subjects needed. Overlaps show up quickly, and this can make your preparation more focused.

“If you are still exploring your options after Class 12, read our guide on college after 12th to understand how to plan your next step.”

Start with the Syllabus and NCERT

When the official CUET UG 2027 syllabus is released download the CUET UG 2027 syllabus for every subject that the student has chosen. Keep the CUET UG 2027 syllabus somewhere the student will see it every day. For domain subjects NCERT Class 12 textbooks are a starting point but the student must make sure that the preparation follows the CUET UG 2027 syllabus for each subject.

Read each chapter carefully. Write brief notes. Note definitions, formulas, dates and key terms.

Many students skip NCERT. Go straight, to guidebooks then discover gaps that cannot be explained. Studying school subjects together with CUET UG 2027 syllabus preparation also helps with board exams. The student’s effort can serve two purposes.

A Study Plan That Fits Around School

This is a suggested study plan for CUET UG 2027. This study plan is not an examination schedule. I think you should adjust the study plan based on the exam date and the syllabus that NTA has announced.

  1. October to December: Start with the domain subjects you have chosen and finish a reading of the NCERT chapters that matter. Spend thirty to forty minutes each day on the language paper you have chosen. If the course you want requires the General Aptitude Test you need to set aside time for awareness and reasoning too.
  2. January to February: Solve practice questions after finishing each chapter. If you need the GAT, begin reading a newspaper regularly and practise numerical ability and reasoning. Don’t let board preparation slide.
  3. March to April: Revise the topics you have studied and start taking mock tests based on the latest available exam pattern. Practise on a computer when possible.
  4. Last four weeks: Continue taking mock tests, review your mistakes and read your short notes again. Give extra attention to topics where you regularly lose marks.

How many hours a day? There’s no magic number. Two to three focused hours on school days and a bit more on weekends may work for some students, depending on their school workload and preparation level. Showing up regularly matters more than studying like crazy for three days and then vanishing for a week.

CUET Preparation Tips Worth Following

Don't underestimate the language paper. You have been reading this language your life so it seems easy.. Comprehension and grammar questions can take longer than you think if you are out of practice. Read one article every day and try a few questions on it. Regular practice can help you improve your speed and understanding.

Spend a time on the GAT if you need it. The General Aptitude Test can include areas such, as knowledge, current affairs, numerical ability and reasoning. If your chosen course requires this paper include it in your routine of leaving it until the last month.

Treat every mock as a lesson. The exam has been computer-based, so computer-based practice can help you become familiar with the format. After each mock, ask why you lost each mark. Did you not understand the concept? Was it a careless slip? Did time run out? Write the reason down. After a few weeks, patterns may start to appear.

Stay calm about negative marking. In the 2026 pattern, incorrect answers carried a penalty. Attempt the questions you know first, then return to the doubtful ones. Use elimination and your understanding of the topic to decide whether to attempt them. Avoid guessing blindly, and follow the marking scheme announced for CUET UG 2027.

Revise in small rounds. Once a week, look back over what you covered in the previous few days, using your short notes. Coming back to a topic after a small gap can help you remember it better than reading it only once.

Starting Late? Here’s How It Can Work

Riya is an imaginary student, created only to show how this plan can work.

Let me share a small story.

Imagine a student called Riya. She wants to study B.Com at a central university, but it’s already February of Class 12 and she hasn’t started any CUET preparation. Her first reaction is panic.

“Everyone else started months ago,” she tells herself. “I think I’m too late.”

She doesn’t try to cover everything at once. She follows a simple plan instead:

  • She spends the first week understanding the available exam information and checking the subjects her chosen universities require.
  • Then she studies two subjects a day, about three hours in total, without skipping weekends completely.
  • After a month, she starts taking mock tests and reviewing her mistakes.

Her first mock scores are not good, and that’s fine. She writes down why she lost marks each time. Over time, she notices that she is becoming faster at reasoning and reading questions.

She doesn’t get there by studying ten hours a day. She gets there by studying regularly and staying calm. The same approach may help you too, even if you feel you’re starting late. Your progress will depend on your starting level, available time and the syllabus you need to cover.

Mistakes Worth Avoiding

  • Waiting for the official notification before starting basic preparation.
  • Choosing subjects without checking what your target universities require.
  • Relying only on coaching notes and ignoring the prescribed syllabus.
  • Treating the language paper and the GAT as an afterthought when your chosen course requires them.
  • Taking mock tests but never reviewing them.
  • Attempting questions without considering the marking scheme.
  • Believing rumours about dates or pattern changes instead of checking NTA’s official announcements.

Where IP Education Can Help

CUET is just one step. Once you have a result, you still need to decide which college and course are right for you, and that’s easier if you’ve been thinking about it early. On IP Education, you can explore information about colleges, courses and admission options as you plan your next step. Doing this research before you finalise your CUET subjects can help you understand the requirements of the courses you’re interested in.

Conclusion

There’s no secret trick to cracking CUET in your first attempt. What helps is understanding the exam information, choosing subjects with your target universities in mind, building a solid NCERT base, taking mock tests seriously and staying calm about negative marking.

Here’s one small task for this week: write down two or three courses you like, open the eligibility pages of the universities offering them, and shortlist the CUET subjects you may need. It takes about an hour, and everything after it gets clearer.

FAQ

1. How many subjects can I choose?

In 2026, you could take up to five papers out of 37. That’s a good guide for now, but do read the 2027 bulletin when it comes out, just in case NTA changes it.

2. Is there negative marking in CUET?

Yes, there was in 2026. A right answer gave you 5 marks and a wrong one took away 1. If you left a question blank, nothing was deducted. Check whether the same rule applies in 2027 once the bulletin is out.

3. Is NCERT enough for CUET preparation?

For your domain subjects, NCERT Class 12 is where you should begin, since the syllabus is based on it. But reading alone won’t do the job. Once you’ve finished a chapter, solve questions on it and take mock tests, so you can see how well you can actually use what you’ve read.

4. Is the CUET exam computer-based?

It was in 2026, and the questions were all multiple choice. So it’s a good idea to practise your mock tests on a computer or laptop. When the screen feels familiar, you’ll waste less time getting used to it on the day.

5. Do I need coaching to crack CUET?

Not always. Plenty of students prepare on their own with NCERT, practice questions and regular mocks. Coaching can be useful if you need structure or someone to keep you on track, but it can’t do the revision and practice for you.
